Mr. Arlépaire by Honoré Daumier Cartoon
|
When the republican revolution of 1830 was frustrated by installation of the Orleanist Louis-Philippe as self-styled "citizen-king," Daumier, democrat, republican, and supreme draughtsman, satirised the corrupt politicians of his repressive régime. As censorship and imprisonment restricted press freedoms, Daumier by-passed the censors by introducing further innovations. -- |
