My Dear Children I carry you all in my heart by Charlet Cartoon
|
A new, democratic, art developed in France under the restored monarchy following the revolutionary period. Like Goya's, its metaphors were satirical and anti-establishment. The heart-shaped posterior in Charlet's cartoon of Louis XVIII telling the populace "My dear children, I carry you all in my heart" leaves no doubt about the part of his anatomy to which his subjects are assigned! Charlet (1792-1845) was a predecessor of Honoré Daumier (1808-79), who elevated caricature to a high level of artistic achievement. -- |
