This 1947 linocut, The Cough… stone dust, universalises the fate of a coal miner dying from silicosis, an occupational disease which progressively destroys the lungs. This sort of image had never before occurred in Australian art, but Counihan was inspired by the great though discontinuous tradition of artists such as Goya --
